Marble is metamorphosed limestone, crystalline or granular, that takes a high polish. It is ideal for vanity tops, shower cubicles and flooring, and has a wider range of colours than most stones — with the veining in most marbles adding to the look of the finished piece.

Marble is softer than granite and quartz, and acids such as lemon juice, wine and some cleaning products can mark a polished surface. That makes it at its best in bathrooms, around fireplaces and on floors, rather than on the busiest kitchen worktops.
